Monja Blanca Silver and Jade Earrings
Approximate measurements
1.25 inches long and 1 inch wide
Handcrafted by José Vicente in Antigua Guatemala, these silver earrings are inspired by the Monja Blanca, the white orchid recognized as Guatemala's national flower. Rather than creating a literal flower shape, the design captures the orchid's distinctive petals and delicate structure through hand-formed silverwork, giving the piece movement and dimension when worn.
The Monja Blanca (Lycaste skinneri alba) holds a unique place in Guatemalan culture and is native to the cloud forests of Mesoamerica. Its rarity and striking white bloom have made it an enduring symbol of the country's natural heritage. José Vicente translates that symbolism into jewelry using traditional silversmithing techniques, shaping each petal individually to reflect the organic character of the flower.
A pale green jade bead suspended beneath the orchid adds a subtle reference to another material deeply connected to Guatemala. The contrast between polished silver and soft green jade creates a balanced design that feels rooted in place rather than trend-driven.
Made in small batches by hand, these Monja Blanca earrings are part of a long tradition of Guatemalan artisan jewelry, where natural forms, cultural symbols, and skilled craftsmanship come together in a way that cannot be replicated by mass production.
